Baccarat Probability

Understand fixed probabilities and house edge in Baccarat

How to Play Baccarat (For Beginners)

Never played Baccarat before? No problem! It's actually the simplest casino game - you don't even make any decisions during the hand!

The Goal

Get as close to 9 as possible. That's it! The hand closest to 9 wins.

How It Works (Super Simple!)

  1. You place a bet on either "Player" or "Banker" (or "Tie" but don't do that - we'll explain why)
  2. Two hands are dealt: One for "Player" and one for "Banker"
  3. Cards are revealed and totaled up
  4. Sometimes a third card is dealt (automatic rules - you don't choose)
  5. Whichever hand is closer to 9 wins!
Important: You're NOT the "Player" - you're just betting on which hand will win. You can bet on "Banker" even though you're a player! Think of it like betting on a horse race - you're just picking which side you think will win.

Card Values (Easy to Remember)

  • Ace: Worth 1 point
  • 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9: Worth their face value (a 7 is worth 7 points)
  • 10, Jack, Queen, King: Worth 0 points (zero!)

The Weird Scoring Rule

Here's the tricky part: Only the last digit counts!

  • 7 + 8 = 15 → Score is 5 (drop the "1")
  • 9 + 9 = 18 → Score is 8 (drop the "1")
  • 6 + 5 = 11 → Score is 1

Natural Win

If either hand totals 8 or 9 on the first two cards, it's a "natural" and wins immediately (unless both have naturals, then highest wins or it's a tie).

Third Card Rules

These rules are automatic - you don't make decisions in Baccarat.

Player's Third Card Rule

  • 0-5: Draws a third card
  • 6-7: Stands
  • 8-9: Natural, no draw

Banker's Third Card Rule

The banker's decision depends on the player's third card:

  • 0-2: Always draws
  • 3: Draws unless player's third card is 8
  • 4: Draws if player's third card is 2-7
  • 5: Draws if player's third card is 4-7
  • 6: Draws if player's third card is 6-7
  • 7: Always stands
  • 8-9: Natural, no draw
Important: You don't need to memorize these rules - they're applied automatically. Understanding them helps you appreciate why the Banker has a slight advantage.

Win Probabilities

Outcome Probability Excluding Ties
Banker Win 45.86% 50.68%
Player Win 44.62% 49.32%
Tie 9.52% -
Key Insight: The Banker wins slightly more often than the Player (50.68% vs 49.32% when ties are excluded), which is why casinos charge a 5% commission on Banker wins.

House Edge & Payouts

Bet Type Payout House Edge
Banker 1:1 (minus 5% commission) 1.06%
Player 1:1 1.24%
Tie 8:1 or 9:1 14.36%
Warning: Despite the attractive 8:1 payout, the Tie bet has a massive 14.36% house edge. This makes it one of the worst bets in the casino.

Expected Value (EV)

Expected value shows your average loss per bet over the long term:

  • Banker Bet: -1.06% (lose $1.06 per $100 wagered)
  • Player Bet: -1.24% (lose $1.24 per $100 wagered)
  • Tie Bet: -14.36% (lose $14.36 per $100 wagered)
Strategy: Always bet on Banker for the lowest house edge. The 5% commission is more than offset by the higher win probability.

Common Myths vs Reality

❌ Myth: Patterns predict future outcomes

✅ Reality: Each hand is independent with fixed probabilities. Past results don't influence future hands.

❌ Myth: Tie bets are good value at 8:1

✅ Reality: The 14.36% house edge makes tie bets terrible value despite the high payout.

❌ Myth: Banker always has the advantage

✅ Reality: Banker wins only 50.68% of non-tie hands - a small edge that's offset by the 5% commission.

❌ Myth: Card counting works in Baccarat

✅ Reality: Card counting provides minimal advantage due to the fixed rules and low edge gain.

Interesting Statistics

  • Average hands per shoe: 70-80 hands (8-deck shoe)
  • Banker streaks: Slightly more common than Player streaks
  • Longest recorded streak: 27 consecutive Banker wins
  • Card counting effectiveness: Minimal edge gain (< 0.1%)

Strategy Tips

  • Always bet on Banker for lowest house edge (1.06%)
  • Never bet on Tie - the 14.36% house edge is too high
  • Understand that no betting system can overcome the house edge
  • Set loss limits and stick to them
  • Don't chase losses with larger bets
  • Recognize that streaks are random - don't bet based on patterns
  • The game is purely chance - no skill involved in outcomes
Important: No betting system (Martingale, Fibonacci, etc.) can mathematically overcome the house edge. They may work short-term but will lose long-term.
